If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would you choose?
I love how the Lord’s Prayer anchors us in a specific time and place. Jesus, a real person who ate literal bread as a daily staple, taught his followers to pray for their daily bread. This speaks to God’s provision; He meets our physical needs.
Sadly, many stop there. After Jesus miraculously fed the five thousand, the crowd tried to force Him to be their king. But Jesus stopped them, explaining that physical bread is temporary. While it fills a stomach today, you will always hunger again. He wanted them to see that He is the true bread from heaven, sent to satisfy our deepest, eternal hunger.
This is a challenging teaching for the church. We often treat Jesus like a checklist for our daily needs while keeping Him at arm's length. We resist internalizing Him as the Bread of Life, often neglecting to "eat His word" by reading the Bible.
Similarly, we excel at providing social support; offering youth drop-ins, language classes, and community events. These are good, necessary things. However, a problem arises when we become so satisfied with the community aspect of church or with doing good deeds that we no longer hunger deeply for Jesus Himself. We must desire a true relationship with the Word of God, both for ourselves and for our communities.
My prayer is that your love, knowledge, and understanding will grow; that you will choose what is truly good and live purely for Christ. Ultimately, may you choose to eat the one food that truly matters for the rest of your life: the Bread of Life.
